ORLANDO, FL -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Jacksonville State University, 65-55, in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in Orlando, FL. Tamica Pierce led FAU with 10 points as the Lady Owls matched a season-low in points scored.
Shanika Freeman led JSU with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Freddricka Embry had 10 points.
FAU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the game's first 37 seconds before JSU came back to take as much as a seven-point lead late in the first half. FAU closed the half with four free throws by Sumika Alexander and trailed 30-27.
In the second half, JSU led 45-39 with 11:00 left before FAU went on a 9-1 run to take a 48-46 lead at the 7:20 mark. However, JSU came back with a 10-2 run over the next 5:51 and led 56-50 with 1:29 remaining. FAU would get no closer as JSU's final margin of 10 points matched its game-high. FAU was held without a field goal for more than seven minutes before connecting for two in the game's final 1:23.
"I really though we would come out a little sharper than we did," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "We never could get the momentum on our side."
"I just didn't see the intensity and fire there," added Dugan. "The loss is really disappointing because, overall, this team played through more and showed more heart than any other team I have had."
JSU outshot FAU 46.7 percent to 38.9 percent. Each team committed 23 turnovers while JSU controlled the boards, 40-24. FAU's largest lead was the opening 4-0 advantage.
The loss ends FAU season with a 14-14 record. JSU improved to 15-13 and will face either Georgia State or Mercer in one of Friday's semifinal games.
