FRISCO, Texas -- Down 17 points in the third quarter in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team rallied back to tie the score in the fourth quarter against UTSA but were unable to make complete the come-from-behind victory at the Ford Center. The Owls fell, 83-71, to conclude the 2017-18 season.
FAU (13-15, 7-9 C-USA) fell behind 17 points to UTSA (9-20, 6-10 C-USA) but were able to climb all the way back to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
The tale of the first quarter was UTSA's hot shooting. The Roadrunners came out making their first four three-point attempts in the first five minutes of the quarter. That shooting confidence carried through the game for UTSA, who shot 53.3 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from three-point range on the day.
UTSA had a 41-31 lead at halftime. The Owls came out in the second half with defensive intensity and midway through the third quarter they were to cut into the UTSA lead with a 10-0 run.
Following the 10-0 run, the Owls were able to carry a 13-0 run into the fourth quarter tying the game at 62. Both teams scored again, knotting things up at 64. From there, UTSA scored five straight points and were able to take a lead for good.
Four Owls scored in double figures. Danneal Ford led the way with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. Her 134 assists this season will stand as the fifth most in a single season in the FAU record book.
Raven Doyle scored 15 points for the third-straight game. She also had seven rebounds and three assists. The senior ends her career with 474 career rebounds, which is the ninth most in FAU history.
Melinda Myers finished her career with nine points, eight rebounds and a career-high five assists. She'll finish with the fourth most career rebounds at FAU with 575.
Malia Kency had four points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Her 254 career assists is the eighth most at FAU.
