MACON, GA - Florida Atlantic University had its four-game winning streak snapped in an 81-73 loss to Mercer University Saturday afternoon in Macon, GA. Mercer's Jessica Miller led all scorers with 26 points. Jackie Brown led FAU with 15 points. Shontavia Williams added 11. FAU dropped to 10-15 on the year and 9-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Mercer improved to 11-14 and 9-9 in the A-Sun.
Miller scored 10 of Mercer's first 12 points as the Bears opened an early 12-3 lead with 17:02 left in the half. Mercer led 25-11 before the Lady Owls pulled to within 25-16 at the 10:18 mark. FAU then fell behind 33-18 before closing the half on a 15-8 run. The Lady Owls trailed 41-33 at halftime. Miller had 17 by the half.
The Bears opened the second half on a 9-2 run and led 50-35 with 17:16 remaining. They built as much as an 18-point lead before the Lady Owls tried to come back late. Trailing 74-58 with 3:32 remaining, FAU scored nine straight points. The run was capped off by five points from Janka Deckerova to pull the Lady Owls within 74-67 at the 2:17 mark. That was close as FAU would get as the Bears scored the next five points to seal the win.
Mercer outshot FAU 46 percent to 40 percent. The Bears went 6-for-14 from beyond the arc while holding FAU to 2-for-13. FAU outrebounded Mercer 48-38.
FAU entered the game needing one win or one Campbell loss to clinch a berth in the A-Sun Tournament.
Florida Atlantic next faces Stetson March 4 at 7:00pm.
