BOCA RATON, Fla. - Freshman Shaneese Bailey scored her career-high 18 points as the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team fell 78-70 at home to Southern Miss on Saturday.
The Owls (13-13, 3-10 C-USA) forced 27 turnovers by the Lady Eagles (21-5, 10-3 C-USA) in the Conference USA matchup. USM's Jamierra Faulkner led all scorers with 29 points in a game that saw 48 fouls called.
FAU jumped out to an early lead, going up by as many as seven on a Shanequa Schrouder 3-pointer at the 15:10 mark of the first half. After the Lady Eagles cut it to a one-point game, Bailey went on her own 5-0 run to put FAU back up by six with less than nine minutes in the half.
Southern Miss would go on an 8-0 run later in the half and would take a two-point lead before Bailey scored five straight, including her first career 3-pointer, to put FAU back up by three. Takia Brooks would finish off the half with a pair of free throws with three seconds left to give the Owls a 45-40 advantage at the intermission.
The Lady Eagles went on a 12-0 run early in the second half to pull away from FAU with eight of those points coming from Faulkner.
USM would earn its largest lead of the game at the 8:10 mark on a fast-break layup by Markia Nix. FAU cut the lead down to seven points twice, including at the one-minute mark, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Senior Kimberly Smith led the Owls with 19 points and four rebounds. The Minneola, Fla. native extended her FAU single-season record with her 75th 3-pointer of the year. The Owls have now made 217 treys on the season, nearing the Conference USA record of 233. Brooks also reached double-digits with 15 points and three assists.
