Denton, TX - Making the first six three-point field goals of the second half, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team rallied for a key 73-60 road victory over the University of North Texas on Wednesday, February 20 at The Super Pit. The Owls overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to improve to 9-9 in Sun Belt Conference play, 12-14 overall and win the regular-season road finale.
After trailing 31-24 at the halftime break, FAU scored the first eight points of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 32-31, with 17:40 remaining in the period. Putting the team on top was a three-point field goal by junior guard Briah Blakely, who was playing near her Dallas hometown.
The lead grew to 41-36 five minutes later after another three-pointer by junior guard Latavia Dempsey.
However, a pair of North Texas free throws by Loryn Goodwin trimmed FAU's lead to 46-44 with 9:45 left in the second half. However, the Owls responded by scoring the next five points to build a seven-point advantage, and the lead grew to 11 points, 63-52, after a Blakely three-pointer with four minutes remaining.
FAU made eight of its 13 shots from behind the arc and shot 60 percent overall in the second half. The team finished the game by making 45 percent of its shot attempts.
North Texas (10-17, 9-9 Sun Belt) raced out to a 14-1 lead in the first six minutes of the game. A three-point field goal by Laura McCoy gave the Mean Green a 21-7 lead with 10:28 left in the half. From that point though, FAU used an 11-2 run over the next eight minutes to get the deficit to five points right before halftime.
Senior guard Breana Turner led four double-figure scorers for Florida Atlantic with 14 points. Junior guard Kimberly Smith added 13 points and seven rebounds. Blakely scored a career-high 13 points in her Texas homecoming and junior guard Takia Brooks chipped in 11 points.
Junior forward Shanequa Schrouder scored eight points off the bench, including striking on 2-of-3 three-point field goal attempts.
North Texas' Alexis Hyder had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the host's offensive attack.
