BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Gardner-Webb, 55-45, Saturday night in Boca Raton. Mistoria Brown led FAU with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Candyse Kelly, Shameka Smith, and Sequenta Blackman all led GWU with 10 points each. The loss drops FAU to 11-13 overall and 9-8 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Bulldogs improved to 8-15 overall and 6-10 in the A-Sun.
FAU never led in the game as GWU opened up a 21-10 lead with 7:47 remaining in the first half. The Lady Owls scored the next six points to make it 21-16 at the 3:52 mark. GWU, despite not making a field goal in the final 7:47 of the half, led 25-20 at the break.
The Lady Owls tried to pick away at the deficit in the second half and eventually tied the game at 40 on a free throw by Mistoria Brown with 7:28 remaining.
The Bulldogs responded with three-pointers on their next two possessions and led 46-40 with 6:36 to go. FAU closed to within 46-43 on a lay-up by Jackie Brown with 5:45 left, but that's as close as FAU would get. Brown finished with 10 points.
GWU went on a 9-0 run to seal the victory and led 55-43 with 50 seconds remaining.
FAU was held to just 35 percent shooting and was 1-10 from beyond the arc. GWU shot 40 percent for the game and 50 percent in the second half. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Lady Owls 41-35.
Florida Atlantic next plays at Troy February 26 in Troy, AL.
