MIAMI, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team dropped an 86-65 decision on the road to rival FIU on Saturday afternoon. The Owls will be back in action on Friday against Southern Miss at 7 p.m. at FAU Arena.
FAU (10-13, 4-8 C-USA) was dominant in the first 1:30 of the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. FIU (7-19, 4-9) responded with a 15-0 run to permanently take the lead. In the second period, the Panthers had two 11-0 runs, outscoring FAU, 27-10 in the frame.
FAU tried to get back into it in the third quarter scoring 23 points but couldn’t keep FIU off the scoreboard with the Panthers connecting on 52.9 percent of their shots in the quarter. Overall, the Owls outscored FIU 40-36 in the second half.
Sasha Cedeño reached the 1,000 career point mark in the first quarter. She is the eighth player at FAU to earn this feat. She finished the game with 17 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one steal. The senior also has hit 20 free throws in a row after going 4-of-4 from the line during the game.
Danneal Ford had her 17th double-digit game of the season with 16 points. She also had seven rebounds and four assists. Malia Kency finished with 11 points and three assists. Raven Doyle had a career-high 12 rebounds in the game along with six points.
The Owls will return home for the final two home games of the season next week. On Friday, FAU will host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. Then the Owls will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday against FIU. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
