BOCA RATON, Fla. - Senior Kimberly Smith scored eight points over the final 1:35 of regulation to send the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team to overtime against UAB, but the Blazers took a 94-91 win in FAU Arena.
The Owls (12-9, 2-6 C-USA) trailed by 10 before Smith led the team on a 15-5 run in the closing minute and a half to tie the game at 86. With 11 seconds left in regulation, Smith had a 3-point attempt blocked, got her own rebound and made a trey to pull FAU within one point.
Senior Shanequa Schrouder made a free throw with one second left to tie the game, but was unable to convert on her second attempt.
In overtime, the Blazers (12-9, 4-4 C-USA) blocked three FAU shots and made 3-of-4 from the free throw line to take the victory.
Smith played 41 minutes and recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. The Minneola, Fla. native made five 3-pointers, marking her 19th game this season with multiple 3-pointers.
Latavia Dempsey led the Owls with 24 points and four steals, shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Takia Brooks scored 15 points and had four assists and three steals in the contest. Freshman Kat Wright tacked on 11 points and a career-high six rebounds.
FAU scored 29 points off of 24 forced turnovers and swiped 14 steals. The Owls dealt out 11 assists while committing just seven turnovers.
UAB shot 54% from the field, led by Karisma Champan's 30 points and 16 rebounds.
The Owls travel to face Tulsa on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
