BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team suffered a 90-57 loss at Conference USA first-place UAB on Saturday night.
FAU (10-8, 4-3 C-USA) fell behind early against UAB (17-3, 6-1 C-USA) and were never able to catch up.
It was a low scoring first period with both teams combining for 26 points. The Blazers started the game scoring the first six points before Ra'Kyra Gabriel hit a pair of free throws to end the UAB run. Overall, UAB would outscore FAU 19-7 in the first quarter. The Owls struggled offensively, only shooting 11.1 percent from the field compared to UAB's 61.5 percent.
The Owls were able to get more going in the second period but were unable to hold UAB. The Blazers grew their lead and were up 46-26 at halftime.
Gabriel and Danneal Ford powered the FAU offense in the third quarter, combining for 14 points (Ford -- 8, Gabriel -- 6). UAB used a 10-0 run midway through the period to keep the Owls at bay.
FAU had another scoring drought in the fourth quarter when the Blazers had a 9-0 run that spanned nearly four minutes.
Ra'Kyra Gabriel led the Owls with 24 points, her second consecutive game with 20-or-more points. She was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and has now hit nine threes in the last four games after hitting only three in her career prior. Gabriel also had seven rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal.
Danneal Ford helped pace the Owls with 16 points. She also had seven assists and five rebounds.
Melinda Myers got a starting nod for the first time this season and had seven points, seven rebounds and two assists.
The Owls will stay on the road next week as they head to Bowling Green, Kentucky to take on WKU. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. (EST). FAU will return home for a pair of games the following week. The Owls will host Middle Tennessee on February 8 at 7 p.m. and then North Texas on February 10 at 7 p.m.
