Boca Raton, FL - Returning to the FAU Arena brought the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team back to its winning ways, beating Troy University 74-63 on Wednesday. The victory swept the season series over the Trojans, improved the Owls to a 6-2 record in Sun Belt Conference action and was the 10th straight home conference win.

Junior guard Latavia Dempsey scored a career-high 24 points, highlighted by 18 points in the first half. She made four 3-point field goals in the victory. Meanwhile, junior forward Chenise Miller had 17 points and eight rebounds, and junior guard Kimberly Smith added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The trio combined for 57 points.

“It was a good win for us. I’m very proud of the team for responding after a difficult week (two road losses last week),” said Kellie Lewis-Jay, FAU’s head women’s basketball coach. “Kim gave everything she had out on the court. Everybody loves the points, but I like Latavia’s hustle plays and defense.”

FAU (9-7, 6-2 SBC) built a 19-10 lead midway through the first half before Troy (3-13, 0-7) closed within three points, 22-19, with 7:50 left in the period. The Owls then used a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to grab a 32-21 advantage and enjoyed a 40-32 halftime edge.

The hosts never trailed in the second half. Troy got within four points, 48-44, at the 14:28 mark before Florida Atlantic went on a 9-3 spurt to take a double-digit lead with 9:57 remaining in the game.

The Owls’ defense forced 31 turnovers, the second highest total of the season. Those turnovers led to 28 points for the victors.

“I love that number (of turnovers). We talked about how we were lacking forcing turnovers in our two road games last week,” said Lewis-Jay. “We were able to force many turnovers in our half-court defense.

FAU defeated Troy 81-80 on December 21 on the Trojans’ home court.

FAU returns to the court on Saturday, January 19 at 3 p.m. against the University of North Texas. Live audio and statistics of the game will be available here. Single-game and mini-plan ticket packages can be purchased through the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
