BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team suffered its first loss in five games on Thursday night to Rice, 67-53, at FAU Arena.
FAU (8-6, 2-1 C-USA) and Rice (13-2, 3-0 C-USA) played an entertaining first half, but Rice was able to expand its lead in the second half and secure the win.
FAU started the game with a 5-0 run but Rice matched them to tie the game. From there, the two teams traded baskets for most of the rest of the period and Rice took a six-point lead into the second.
In the second period, FAU stayed with Rice and even retook the lead at the 8:06 mark. At halftime, Rice led 28-25.
Rice had a 7-0 run midway through the third period to extend their lead to double digits, but FAU continued to fight back. However, Rice ended the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 21-point lead into the final period.
FAU fought back and outscored Rice, 17-10, in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough.
Danneal Ford and Sasha Cedeño each had 12 points in the game. Ford has scored double digits in four straight games. For also had three rebounds and three assists. Cedeño led all FAU rebounders with eight in the game.
The Owls have the weekend off and will be action again on January 18 at UTEP. It will be a rematch after less than a week ago when FAU topped the Miners, 72-66. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. (EST).
