BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team stayed in the winning column on Sunday afternoon with a 72-66 win against UTEP at FAU Arena. The Owls improve to 2-0 in Conference USA play and stretch their winning streak to four games.
FAU (8-5, 2-0 C-USA) used the first quarter to build a lead against UTEP (10-5, 1-1 C-USA) that they would not relinquish for the entirety of the game. The Owls had a 21-10 advantage after the first period behind four three-point shots from Tyana Robinson, Danneal Ford and Malia Kency.
The second quarter was back-and-forth and the Owls went into halftime with a 37-26 lead. The Miners outscored FAU in the final two quarters, but FAU held on for the win.
Tyana Robinson led all scorers with 19 points in the contest with five three pointers, two points shy of her career high. She also an assist and a steal.
Danneal Ford was second on the team in points with 15 and she had five rebounds and three assists.
FAU outrebounded UTEP, 44-38, in the game. The Miners came into the contest averaging 41.6 rebounds per game, which was third highest in Conference USA. The Owls outscored the Miners in points off of turnovers, 24-10, and second chance points, 21-6.
The Owls are one of six teams in Conference USA to start the season 2-0.
The Owls will end a five-game homestand and continue conference play with Rice on Thursday, January 11 at FAU Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
