DELAND, FL - Florida Atlantic University lost its first Atlantic Sun Conference game of the season in an 83-76 defeat Saturday afternoon to Stetson University in DeLand, FL. Crystal Boyland led FAU with 19 points while the Hatters were led by Amy White's game-high 24 points.
FAU (5-7, 3-1 A-Sun) had four players in double figures with Tamica Pierce scoring 15 points, LaKeita Lee 12, and Janka Deckerova 11. Along with White, Stetson's Eboni Long had 17 points and 13 rebounds while Kristy Brown added 11.
The Lady Owls jumped out to a 20-12 lead with 12:25 to play in the first half before the Hatters took control the remainder of the half. After a Julie Goad jumper at the 7:50 mark gave FAU a 25-21 lead, Stetson (4-7, 3-1 A-Sun) went on an 11-0 run in outscoring the Lady Owls 24-8 the rest of the half to lead 45-33 at the break.
Florida Atlantic looked poised to erase the lead with a 16-9 run over the first 5:01 of the second half before the Hatters edged back out in front 62-49 with 13:01 remaining. Six straight points by the Lady Owls cut the deficit to seven points before Stetson once again regained a nine point lead with 5:16 to play.
A transition lay-up by Lee completed a 7-0 run that pulled FAU to within 73-71 with 2:50 to play. A Tashean Thomas field goal with 1:16 left gave Stetson a 77-73 as the Lady Owls would pull no closer than three points the rest of the way.
Stetson outshot FAU 45 percent to 38 percent and held a 54-42 advantage on the boards. FAU forced Stetson into 26 turnovers while committing 21. The Hatters went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc while FAU managed just 2-of-18.
Florida Atlantic next hosts Central Florida January 9 at 7:00pm.
