BOCA RATON, FL -- Florida Atlantic University ended a six-game losing streak in convincing fashion as it crushed Jacksonville University, 80-43, Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville, FL. FAU's Jackie Brown led all scorers with 14 points as FAU outscored JU 50-17 in the second half. The win improves FAU to 2-7 on the year and 1-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Lady Owls opened up an early 10-point lead on a lay-up by Cristal Randolph at the 8:25 mark that gave FAU a 20-10 lead. JU (2-7, 0-2 A-Sun) crept back to within one point before FAU closed the half leading 30-26.
It was the second half that would prove to be the difference as the Lady Owls jumped out with 15-2 run to lead 45-28 with 15:08 remaining. The stretch was capped off by consecutive three-pointers by Julie Goad, Janka Deckerova, and Brown.
A free throw by JU's Katie McDonald with 11:29 left pulled the Dolphins to within 50-37 before FAU took control of the game. The Lady Owls ran off 12 straight points before a free-throw by Sheena Carpenter stopped the run. The Lady Owls promptly scored 14 more points to finish off a 26-1 run over an eight-minute stretch and led 76-38 at the 3:42 mark.
Twelve Lady Owls scored in the game. Brown was the only one in double-figures. Randolph finished with nine points while Shontavia Williams added eight to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. DeKesh Frazier and Trineca McCleod finished with seven points.
FAU shot 45 percent and held JU to 22 percent. The Dolphins committed 31 turnovers and went 0-for-11 from beyond the arc. The Lady Owls also controlled the boards with a 48-40 rebounding edge.
"I was pleased with our intensity," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "Our pressure was a huge key this afternoon. It was also good to be able to get so many in there today and for them to play as well as they did."
The margin of victory was FAU's largest since defeating Jacksonville 82-45 on February 8, 2001.
