Men’s and Women’s Cross Country in Lakeland for Friday Evening Race
Sept. 28, 2017

BOCA RATON, Fla. The Florida Atlantic University men’s and women’s cross country squads suit up again this weekend, to run Friday evening in Lakeland, Florida, at the 18th annual Invitational.

The entirety of the men’s team and 11 select women’s runners will descend upon Holloway Park, for races at 5:20 p.m. (women) and 5:50 p.m. (men). The course is located at 3050 Lakeland Highlands Road, and it is the first year it has been held at Holloway Park. The meet itself has been in existence since the year 2000.

“This week's race in Lakeland will be used primarily as a dry run for the bigger meets still ahead of us this season,” said Head Coach Alex Smolka. “On the men's side, it's only a 5K, which will give us an opportunity to race without needing the same type of recovery we usually require after 8K efforts. On the women's side, we won't have everybody racing, but those who will, will benefit from an additional race down the road.”

As previously stated, the whole men’s team will compete: Sean Barone, Hermano Cherilus, John Marting, Nolan Meuret, Cristian Moreno, Ross Rabalais, Lachlan Shiver and Jonathan Werble. The women’s contingent will be made up of Brooke Butterfield, Carydaliz Fontanez, Johanna Freeman, Megan Giovanniello, Morgan Graff, Kali Hazera, Christina Humphries, Mikaela Jonsson, Erika Mares, Kelsey Meltzer and Jasmine Van Tine.

As far as the opposition in Lakeland, here are the other collegiate teams scheduled to race in addition to the Owls: Ave Maria, FIU, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, Rollins, South Florida State, Tampa, UCF, Warner and Webber International.
