Men's Tennis Signs St. Petersburg's Garrett Betsarakis for 2011-12 Season

May 21, 2011

Boca Raton, Fla. - Standout Florida high school tennis player Garrett Betsarakis has joined the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis program for the 2011-12 season. The St. Petersburg native recently signed a National Letter of Intent to participate in athletics at the NCAA Division1 university.

Betsarakis helped Shorecrest Prep High School to a runner-up finish last season in Florida's Class 1A Division state tournament.

"Garrett comes from a terrific family, had a successful career in junior tennis, and will be an excellent student at our university," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "As he transitions into the collegiate game, Garrett will make an immediate impact on our team and program. I am thrilled to welcome Garrett and his family to FAU."

Betsarakis has experience competing against some of Florida's most talented junior players while participating the past 10 years in United States Tennis Association tournaments.

"A couple of things were important in my decision to continue my playing career in college," said Betsarakis. "First, there was the coach. I have had a great relationship with Coach Stokes for a couple years and know what he expects out of me. I know he will push me to become a better player."

Other strong points in the decision-making process for Batsarakis were FAU's strong schedule, playing many of the southern region's top teams, and being able to play close to his home. FAU has a strong program, coming off its third consecutive winning season, with a 12-10 record, and advancing to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference championships for the third straight year.

"I also wanted to be part of a program with many good players and a strong schedule. That will help me develop throughout my college career," noted Betsarakis. "I've also lived in Florida all my life. I am happy that I will be able to stay in one of the nicest cities in Florida."
