Athens, GA - Florida Atlantic University freshman Will Neuner advanced to Saturday's second round with a three-set victory in the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga.
Neuner won the deciding third set 6-4 over the University of North Florida's Julian Belair. The Pensacola native won the opening set 6-4 before falling 6-0 in the second frame.
"Will competed fine today to advance to the second round," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "Both guys played a clean match and fought to the end."
Neuner will face University of Florida's Spencer Newman on Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m.
In other Friday matches, junior Taylor Albrecht fell in straight sets in a first-round match against Florida A&M University's C. Salif Kante, while freshman Chris Janssen dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match against University of Miami's Gabriel Flores.
In doubles, Neuner and Albrecht fell 8-5 in a first-round match to North Florida's Beau Treyz and Belair. That UNF duo later advanced to the round of 16 in the tournament. Also, the duo of freshman Sean Bacha and Janssen dropped a 9-7 decision to Bob van Overbeek and Andrew Butz, the sixth-seeded team from Florida.
"We started the day slow, which is unacceptable, but the boys listen and are prepared to fight to the end," said Stokes. "We improved as the day progressed. We are fresh and ready for Saturday."
