Winter Park, FL - Alena Dvorakova and F.J. Schofield are the only Florida Atlantic University tennis players still alive in the main draws after the second day of play Saturday in the C.L. Varner Invitational hosted by Rollins College. Freshman Pia Terol, in her first collegiate tournament, has reached the final of the consolation bracket.
Dvorakova ousted North Florida's Liliana Hung 6-1, 6-3 in their quarterfinal match-up before disposing of Hung's teammate Zhenya Barysheva 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Ironically, Barysheva had knocked out FAU's Katherine Bartnik 6-2, 6-0 in the previous round. Dvorakova will face Tasi Purcell of Rollins College in the championship game on Sunday morning.
Schofield had a little more trouble advancing, taking three sets to defeat Mario Cayo of Stetson in the third round before defeating Barry's Manuel Lauter 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Schofield will take on Milos Koprivica of Florida Southern in Sunday morning's semifinals.
Terol, who lost in Friday's opening round, won twice on Saturday to advance to Sunday's consolation final. David Demers, the other FAU player in the consolation bracket, was up 6-5 in his match before having to retire because of an injured knee.
Antonello Magris was eliminated by default in the third round of the men's single bracket while on the doubles side, Schofield and Kevin Obletz were eliminated in Saturday's third round and the team of Bartnik and Terol fell in their quarterfinals.
