BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men’s tennis traveled to Ft. Myers over the weekend to play in the Bedford Cup hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. Eleven teams from around the state of Florida participated in the tournament including Miami, University of Florida and Florida State. Three FAU players advanced to the finals with Freshman Anthony Schohn advancing to the semi-finals.
FAU assistant coach Richard Meade was impressed with teams showing in the tournament.
“I thought that the team played extremely hard and showed a lot of resiliency,” Said Mead.
“The guys should gain a lot of confidence after their strong showing over the weekend. I think we made a statement to the rest of the teams in Florida and showed what we are capable of doing going forward. If we continue to work hard there is no limit to what we can accomplish this season.”
FAU senior Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff won his first two matches of the tournament advancing to the quarterfinals. Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Julian Bradley of North Florida 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, before defeating Mariano Porter of UCF 6-2, 6-1. FAU freshman won his first three matches to advance to the semi-finals. Schohn defeated Gonzalo Arroyo of Stetson 6-4, 6-2, Reece Acree of UCF 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Bernard Tefel of Miami 7-5, 7-6 (0-5). FAU sophomore Zandrix Acob defeated Barrero,Alvaro of Bethune-Cookman 6-2, 6-2, and Coilin MacNamara of Stetson 6-4, 6-4. FAU sophomore Ignacio Jimenez defeated Lucas Vaz of Florida Gulf Coast 7-6, 6-2.
FAU men’s tennis returns to action October 16-20 in the ITA regional tournament in Gainesville, FL and will host an alumni weekend October 9-11. Alumni weekend will include events through out the weekend including a tailgate for FAU vs. Rice football game.
