Fort Myers, FL - Two Florida Atlantic University men’s doubles teams have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational after posting opening victories on Friday.
The tandem of sophomore Sean Bacha and senior Jose Fantova earned a dominating 8-3 win over the University of Miami’s Victor Mauz and Jack Murphy. They will now face Barry University’s Leo Vivas and Eduardo Alfonzo on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the regionally ranked team of senior Taylor Albrecht and sophomore Will Neuner received a first-round bye and are preparing to play FGCU’s Tianyu Bao and Lance Lvovsky in the quarterfinals.
In singles play, Neuner picked up a pair of victories to face UCF’s Jorge Blasco in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Pensacola, Fla. native won a hard-fought, three-set opening match over Barry’s Romain Costamagna. A 6-2 victory in the second set forced the deciding third frame, where he dropped only one game. Then, Neuner improved to 3-1 in singles action this fall with a 7-5, 6-4 win over FGCU’s Bao.
Albrecht lost in a second-round match, while Fantova dropped a three-set decision in the opening round.
