Gainesville, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team continued its improvement in the early stages of the 2011-12 season, posting a strong effort in doubles action on Saturday in the second day of Gator Invitational in Gainesville.
The tandem of junior Taylor Albrecht and freshman Will Neuner dropped only one game in defeating USF's top team. Then, sophomore Chris Janssen and Garrett Betsarakis fell in a competitive match against a Bulls' team.
"We continue to make small improvements in doubles and singles," said Brandon Stokes, FAU's head men's tennis coach. "The boys are learning and growing together. This is a wonderful and challenging opening tournament for the fall season."
In singles, Neuner fell in a hard-fought three-set match to USF's Lucas Marin Salcedo. Neuner forced the deciding third set by winning the second set 6-1. Albrecht dropped a straight-set match by identical 6-4 scores to Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard, who has earned an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking throughout his career.
FAU will conclude play in its opening fall tournament on Sunday, September 18, when the players battle in-state rival UCF opponents, starting at 10 a.m.
"We appreciate all the FAU fans coming out to cheer us on today," said Stokes. "We look forward to seeing them tomorrow."
