Senior Daniel Vardag picked up a doubles and singles victory in Thursday's first round win over Western Kentucky

Mobile, Ala. - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team has advanced to the semifinal round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships for the fourth straight season with a strong 4-0 victory over Western Kentucky University in Thursday's first-round match in Mobile, Ala.
The Owls, the tournament's No. 2 seed, advances to play No. 3 seeded University of South Alabama on Friday, April 22, starting at 3 p.m. FAU has a 12-9 record this season and defeated USA, 4-2, on April 10 in the Sun Belt Shootout. However, Friday's matchup will be played on the Jaguars' home courts.
Against WKU, Florida Atlantic quickly grabbed momentum of the match by winning the doubles point. The tandem of senior Daniel Vardag and junior Derek Madon did not drop a game in the No. 3 match, while the freshman duo of Omar El Kheshen and Marc Wakim earned an 8-4 win at No. 2.
The momentum carried into singles action with freshman Oliver Webb joining Wakim and Vardag in earning straight-set victories to secure the match. Madon won by 6-0, 6-3 scores at No. 6 singles before Vardag dropped only three games to win the No. 3 match. Webb won in dominant fashion 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
In singles matches that weren't completed, All-Sun Belt Conference player Marc Abdelnour was leading 6-3, 4-1; senior Ervin Garibovic won the first set at No. 2 singles 6-4; and El Kheshen was leading 6-0, 3-0 at the No. 4 position.
