Owls Cruise Past Wildcats

BOCA RATON, FL - In its final regular season match prior to next week's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, Florida Atlantic University cruised past visiting Bethune-Cookman College, 5-2, in Boca Raton. The Owls improved to 7-11 overall while the Wildcats lost their 11th straight match and dropped to 4-15.

The Owls started the match doing something they had not done all year and that was sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. In singles, Mauricio Paiz defeated Terry Powell, 6-0, 6-0, at no. 6 to give FAU a 2-0 lead.

F.J. Schofield made it 3-0 when he blanked Fernando Marcato in straight sets at no. 2. The Owls clinched the victory when David Demers won, 6-0, 6-1, at no. 3 to make it 4-0. Gianfranco Dossena picked up the last win and point for FAU with a victory at no. 5.

Florida Atlantic now sets its sights on the A-Sun Tournament this Thursday through Sunday in DeLand, FL. FAU is the no. 6 seed and faces no. 11 Gardner-Webb Thursday at 11:30am. Should the Owls win, they will face no. 3 UCF Friday afternoon in a quarterfinal. The semifinals will be held on Saturday with the championship taking place on Sunday.
