The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team won its last two matches to capture the consolation bracket of the Sun Belt Shootout last weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The Owls defeated Southern Illinois University, 4-0, and knocked off conference rival Troy University, 4-3, and losing to DePaul University, 4-0, in the opening match.
FAU takes a 13-8 record into the SBC Championship Tournament on April 19-21 in Denton, Texas.
Against Southern Illinois, junior Taylor Albrecht cruised to a victory in the No. 1 singles match, dropping only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
Freshman Sean Bacha picked up a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-3) at No. 6 singles to give FAU a 2-0 advantage. Victories by freshmen Garrett Betsarakis (6-2, 4-6, 6-0) at No. 4 singles and Boris Bogomolov (6-2, 6-3) at No. 5 singles clinched the shutout victory.
Later in the day, FAU found itself down 2-0 in singles action against Troy in the consolation round final match. The team quickly rebounded with consecutive victories by freshmen Boris Bogomolov (6-3, 6-3) at No. 5 singles and Bacha (6-4, 0-6, 6-0) at No. 6 singles.
Troy retook the lead with a victory at the No. 3 singles position before Albrecht won a hard-fought, three-set victory to even the singles portion of the match. Albrecht won the deciding third set by a 6-3 score.
The Owls clinched the team victory by winning two of the three doubles matches, including an 8-6 victory by freshman Will Neuner and Albrecht in the No. 1 match.
