Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team came close to defeating one of the nation's best programs, losing a competitive 4-3 home match to nationally ranked Oklahoma State University on Thursday at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton. The visiting Cowboys were ranked 72nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll.
The Owls, now 11-6 this season, will face another nationally ranked opponent in Brown University on Wednesday, March 21, at 2 p.m.
FAU swept all three doubles matches to grab early momentum in the match. The freshmen duo of Sean Bacha and Boris Bogomolov dropped only two games in picking up a victory at No. 3 doubles. Other winners were the tandem of junior Taylor Albrecht and freshman Will Neuner in the No. 1 match (8-4), and freshmen Chris Janssen and Robert Dubuque at No. 2 (8-6).
In singles, Albrecht improved to 16-1 on the spring and recorded his 20th singles victory for the season with a three-set decision in the No. 1 match. The Sarasota native had to rally after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker. Bogomolov was the other FAU winner, in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), at No. 6 singles.
Meanwhile, the Owls worked hard for the deciding fourth point. Bacha dropped a hard-fought, three-set match at No. 5 singles that clinched the team victory for the Oklahoma State. He forced the third set with a 6-4 win in the second set, before dropping the third set by a 6-3 score. Janssen also lost in three sets at No. 2 singles. Janssen dropped the deciding third set by a 7-5 score.
