BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men’s tennis fell to Northern Illinois on Wednesday 4-1. FAU had to fight back from a 1-0 deficit, after losing the doubles point on a tough tiebreak in the No.1 doubles position. FAU junior Will Nuener and FAU freshman Stefan Burnett defeated Javon Zeljkovic and Matt Lynch 8-7 (7-5) in the No. 3 position to even the doubles matches. FAU junior Sean Bacha and FAU freshman Gerald Nickerson battled to 7-7 before losing to Dor Amir and Axel Lagerlof 8-7 (9-7) to give NIU a 1-0 lead.
The Owls needed four wins in singles to pull out the match. FAU’s Will Neuner was the only Owl to record a win, defeating Dor Amir 6-3, 6-2. Unfortunately for FAU the Huskies were able to win the necessary three singles matches required for the win and the match was called. FAU Junior Richard Meade led his match Axel Lagerlof 1-6, 6-4, 3-0 and FAU freshman Gerald Nickerson led his match Javon Zeljkovic 4-6, 6-2, 2-1.
FAU looks to bounce back tomorrow March 13, at 2p.m. in a match against East Carolina at home in Boca Raton at Patch Reef Park.
