BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic men's tennis fell to Troy Monday 4-3. FAU was unable to hold on to an early lead after winning the doubles point, and the match come down to the No. 5 position singles match.
FAU freshman Gerald Nickerson played the No. 5 position match and went to three sets before dropping the match to Mansingh Athare 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4. FAU needed three singles matchup victories to win the match, but was only able to manage two. FAU junior Sean Bacha defeated Daniel Bustamante 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and FAU sophomore John Nowak defeated Tommy Cundy 6-0, 6-2.
FAU head coach Ricardo Gonzalez believes the losing a close match will improve his team's resolve.
"This was a disappointing loss and we need to move on and forget about the way we lost. We have to get our heads together," said Gozalez.
"I have no doubt in my mind that our guys will learn from this and bounce back even stronger."
FAU is back in action Wednesday March 12, at 2 p.m. against Northern Illinois at home in Boca Raton.
