BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic men’s tennis fell to No. 68 UCF 4-3 on Saturday. The Owls fought off an early deficit losing the doubles point, and won three singles matches almost pulling of the upset. The loss moves the owls to 5-5 on the season.

FAU split the first two matches of the doubles point with FAU sophomore Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff and FAU junior Will Neuner defeating Matthew Gladstone and Francesc Aulina 6-1. FAU Juniors Sean Bacha and Robert Dubuque could not beat out Reece Acree and Jose Sangroniz and loss 6-5 (3-5), after failing to win match point 3 times. Despite dropping the doubles point FAU fought hard and won 3 singles matches to put themselves in position for the upset.

“Against good teams like UCF, it is tough to get 4 out of the 6 singles,” said FAU head coach Ricardo Gonzalez.

“We had opportunities unfortunately we just could not capitalize. It is a tough loss but I am pleased with the way our guys are competing.”

FAU sophomore Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Francesc Aulina 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. FAU Junior Will Neuner defeated Chris Barrus 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 and FAU junior Richard Meade defeated Inaki Espindola 6-4, 4-6, 6-5 (6-4). FAU junior Robert Dubuque pushed two sets to tiebreakers before losing to Jesse Flores 6-5 (2-0), 6-5 (4-2).


 

 

The Owls are back in action Saturday Feb. 22, at 5 p.m. in Tallahassee against FSU.
