Tallahassee, FL - Florida Atlantic University senior Marc Abdelnour won his record-setting 72nd singles match to help the Owls split a pair of matches on Saturday in the Seminole Classic at Tallahassee, Fla. The team opened the spring season by defeating Furman University, 4-0, before falling 7-0 to No. 27-ranked Florida State University, the tournament's host.

Abdelnour, ranked No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast region preseason poll, dropped only four games to pick up a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-3) over Furman's Sawyer Duncan at No. 1 singles -- anchoring four straight FAU victories in the morning match. The Syria native broke Doug Devriendt's previous record, and also ranks among the college's all-time leaders in double victories, total triumphs (singles and doubles) and winning percentage.

Later, Abdelnour suffered a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 loss to FSU's Clint Bowles, the nation's No. 37-ranked singles player in the preseason ITA poll.

Other FAU singles winners against Furman included senior Daniel Vardag, a 6-2, 6-2 winners over the Paladins' Alex Christ at No. 2; senior Ervin Garibovic, who defeated Furman's Andrew Mellow 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3; and newcomer Omar Carrasco, who tallied his first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 position. Vardag lost a challenging match against the Seminoles' Vahid Mirzadeh 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the afternoon.

FAU will wrap up action in the Seminole Classic on Sunday with a match against No. 42-ranked University of Nebraska, starting at 10 a.m.
