Alex Alcantara was named men's head tennis coach in the fall of 2001. Alcantara essentially took over the program mid-semester, however, he assumed a program that has gained tremendous respect over the last four seasons, advancing to both the 2000 and the 2001 NCAA Championship and capturing the 2001 Atlantic Sun Championship.

Alcantara came to FAU with an outstanding background. He has served as a private instructor since 1997. From 1992-97 he worked for the Harmonia Tennis Clube where he served as the Tennis Director in charge of junior competition teams and where he organized national and international tennis events. He moved to the Harmonia Clube after a four-year stint, (1988-92) at the Italy Sports where he was manager and Head Pro, in partnership with Carlos Kirmayr. From 1984-88 Alcantara was a coach at Associacao dos Funcionarios Publicos de S.B.C.

Alcantara received his degree from Faculdade de Educacao Fisica Santo Andre in Sao Paulo, Brazil in physical education.

Alcantara played on the Professional Tennis Tour from 1980-1984 and served as a professional coach from 1985-87. He also served as an assistant coach on the tour with Carlos Kirmayr and Gabriela Sabatini.
