BOCA RATON, Fla. - After five consecutive home wins, the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team will travel to Birmingham, AL this weekend to face Conference USA opponent the UAB Blazers at West Campus Field.
FAU's record in games against UAB is 1-1-0 and the team is 0-1 in games at UAB. The two teams first met in 2000 and last met in 2001.
The Owls have found success early on this season with an overall record of 5-0-1 and a conference record of 1-0-0. FAU hosted FIU in their first conference match on Sept. 14, where they beat the Panthers 2-1.
Under head coach Kos Donev, now in his 27th season, and new assistant coaches Giovanni dela Rosa and Brian Galvin, the Owls have already recorded more wins this season than in the entire 2012 season. FAU wrapped up the 2012 season 2-13-1.
West Campus Field is sure to see a challenging match on Sunday as the Owls and the Blazers are neck and neck at the head of the conference. UAB has completed nine games compared to FAU's six and has an overall record of 7-1-1. Both teams are undefeated in conference play however FAU is the only remaining undefeated team in Conference USA. The Blazers are the first nationally ranked team FAU has faced this season holding 15th place according to the NSCAA coaches ranking as of Oct. 1.
UAB currently leads FAU and the entire conference in points with an average of 6.44 per game versus FAU's 5.83. The Blazers also lead FAU in goals scored against them, only allowing five over nine games while FAU has allowed seven over six games. UAB's average of 2.33 goals per game is just barely puts them ahead of FAU with an average of 2.17. The teams are tied with 30 total saves giving FAU an edge in saves per game averaging five while UAB averages 3.33.
FAU's advantage over UAB can be found in its two leading scorers Ryan Price and Deniz Bozkurt. Price and Bozkurt are first and fourth, respectively, in the conference in points per game.
Price is tied for first in Conference USA with UAB's David Ruiz, each with six total goals, but Price ranks higher in average per game. As of Oct. 3, Price is tied for second in the nation for points per game and tied for third in goals per game
The Owls' have managed to avoid defeat this season with the help of freshman goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux who is first in the conference with 30 total saves and an average of five saves per game. Going into the match, Jamilloux is tied for 23rd in the nation in saves per game. UAB's goalkeeper, Raphael Ville leads the conference with a goals against average of 0.56 versus Jamilloux's 1.08.
