Sept. 29, 2009
BOCA RATON, FL - The Owls' triumphantly returned from Jacksonville on Sunday after a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over North Florida extended FAU's unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2). The reward for the comeback win, a full week of practice to prepare for their MAC opener on Saturday night as the top-ranked Akron Zips will visit FAU Soccer Stadium under the lights in primetime at 7 pm.
Akron received a dominating 21 out of 22 first-place votes in the recent NSCAA Poll and could enter the game 8-0 if they defeat in-state rival Ohio State at home on Wednesday night. The Owls will enter the conference opener with a 4-2-2 record and will try to avenge a 7-0 defeat in Akron a season ago.
So far in 2009, FAU has been led on offense by sophomore forward Darnell King. King is leading the team with six points (two goals, two assists) and has been instrumental in the team's current four-game unbeaten streak. The streak started back on September 17 when King came off the bench to score the game-tying goal in the 79th minute in a 1-1 draw against Manhattan. Two days later, the Tampa, FL native tallied his first assist of the season in the Owls 2-0 victory over Houston Baptist. In Sunday's overtime victory, King came through in the clutch again providing the assist on Rocco Pecora's game-winning goal in overtime.
Also providing a recent spark has been senior captain Jordan Kelly. Kelly returned from injury in the Owls 1-0 loss to Stetson on September 13. The London, England native has recorded two assists since his return to the lineup and has provided veteran leadership on both sides of the pitch.
After Saturday's duel with Akron, FAU will have another week off to prepare for their second MAC game as they will travel to Oneonta, NY to take on Hartwick on October 10.
