Mercer, GA - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team received a treat on Halloween by clinching a spot in the 2003 Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Tournament with a 4-0 win against Mercer on Friday night. The Owls defeated the Bears for the first time since 1998 as four different players scored to end Mercer's chances of a regular season title.
FAU (9-7-1, 6-2-0 A-Sun) got the momentum early as keeper Anders Granstad knocked away Del Olaoye's penalty kick in the second minute of the game. The Owls would take advantage of its opportunity by scoring a minute later when Bjorn Masson scored his second game-winning goal of the season.
Kristoffer Aarskog would score his team and conference leading 14th goal in the 22nd minute. He has now scored a goal in four consecutive games.
Mercer (7-8-0, 5-3-0 A-Sun) would press late in the game but FAU would tack on two more goals by Bjorn Totland and Mathew Baum to seal the victory. Josh Garbee's assist on Totland's goal gave him a point in three consecutive games.
Granstad recorded seven saves as the Owls recorded their third shutout of the season. Mercer outshot FAU 17-16 and won the corner battle 5-4.
The Owls wrap up their A-Sun schedule on Sunday against Georgia State. FAU can clinch the number two seed and receive a first-round bye in the tournament with a win against the Panthers. Florida Atlantic returns home Sunday, November 9 to play against Howard at 1 pm in the team's last home game of the year. Individual ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for seniors/children.
