Boca Raton, FL - The University at Buffalo scored once in each half to earn a 2-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team in a Mid-American Conference match on Saturday evening at the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.
The loss eliminates the Owls from qualifying for the conference tournament with a 0-4-1 league record. Overall, FAU stands 5-7-2 on the season. The visiting Bulls improve to 8-7-1 for the fall and 3-2 in league play.
Buffalo struck first in the 15th minute when Maksym Kowal finished a crossing pass from Andy Tiedt just outside the left post and directed the kick just inside the right post. It was Kowal's fourth goal of the season.
The visiting Bulls took a 2-0 advantage when Tony Smith found the back of the net for the first time this season. Lukas Fedler played a long ball to Smith, who was able to misdirect a shot in the air over the FAU goalkeeper Jeremy Crumpton and inside the upper right corner of the goal.
FAU attempted all five of its shots in the second half, including four in a 10-minute span midway through the period. The Owls' lone shot on goal came from Sky Cutler following a free kick. Deniz Kozkurt led the team with two shots while Jefferson Dias and Martin Nesic each added one shot.
The Owls will close out the season on Sunday, November 6, with a home match against the University of Akron, the defending national champions. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The soccer program will honor its seniors prior to the match.
