BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite a comeback attempt in the final minute of play, the Florida Atlantic University Owls recorded their first home loss of the season, 2-1, against the Conference USA-leading Old Dominion University Monarchs on Saturday night.
ODU’s win improved their record to 9-3-1 while FAU’s overall record is now 6-4-2.
FAU’s offensive attack was neck-and-neck with ODU’s in the first period as the Owls collected five shots versus the Monarchs’ six. Ryan Price attempted the first shot of the match in the second minute of play, shooting high over the net.
ODU attempted two shots, both saved by FAU’s goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux, before putting their first goal on the board off of a header in the 14th- minute. Five minutes later, a second header goal was recorded by the Monarchs off of a corner kick putting FAU down 2-0 at the half.
FAU’s defense was able to keep ODU from putting any more goals on the board in the second half as Jamilloux collected three saves against the Monarch’s seven shot attempts.
In the final five minutes, the Owls made their last attempts to score against ODU. Deniz Bozkurt took a corner kick in the 86th minute that allowed Cole Juavanie to attempt a header but the ball went wide. Juavanie regained possession of the ball in the 88th minute attempting another shot but failed to find the net.
With just 40 seconds remaining, Jason Fitzgerald collected his third goal of the season, however, the clock ran out before FAU could tie the score.
FAU will return to the pitch to host conference opponent Charlotte on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. before their final road contest at Kentucky on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m.
