BOCA RATON, FL – The Florida Atlantic men’s soccer team snapped a nine-match winless streak by defeating the Howard Bison Sunday afternoon, 1-0.

The Owls got on the board quickly, as Roberto Rivera headed in a free kick off the foot of Daniel Mendes at the 4:57 mark of the first half. The FAU defense was able to make the one-goal lead hold up by limiting the Bison to just seven shots, only three on goal, in the game.

Goalkeepers Jeremy Crumpton and Scott Power split time, each contributing a half to the shutout. Crumpton had one save before the break and Power had two after.

Howard had their best chance to equalize in a 30-second stretch in the 75th minute, but Power turned away consecutive SOG attempts by Mario Martin and Brian Monge.

The Owls did have an opportunity to extend the lead when a Howard player was called for a foul in the box late in the second half. But the penalty kick attempt in the 82nd minute by Karol Chorak was saved up and over the crossbar by Bison goalkeeper Eric Hamilton.

The win is the Owls’ first since August 31, and brings their record on the season to 2-9-1. Howard drops to 1-13. FAU is back in action this Friday, October 19, in a conference road matchup at Buffalo. Game time is 2 p.m.
