Orlando, FL - ,Orlando, FL Sophomore Bjorn Masson and freshman Reggie Merisier each scored a goal as Florida Atlantic University defeated the University of Central Florida 2-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer action at the UCF Arena Soccer Field.
UCF started out strong and had a good opportunity to take the lead in the 12 minute but a shot from 10 yards out in front of FAU goalkeeper Jonas Kolstad missed wide left. Less than a minute later, UCF keeper Juuso Heikurainen made a brilliant save with his left arm on a Emiliano Aranes shot from only five yards out.
Both teams continued to create scoring chances. In the 34th minute Bjorn Masson made a great individual effort on the right-hand side and dribbled the ball pass a UCF defender, before knocking it in with his left foot from 15 yards out. The goal was Masson's second of the season.
The Golden Knights continued to press in the second half, before Reggie Merisier scored in the penalty box, after receiving a pass from freshman Josh Garbee and Masson at the 73:47 mark. FAU had an opportunity to take a 3-0 lead, but freshman Kristjan Masson pushed his penalty kick over the crossbar with eight minutes to play.
FAU improves to 4-6 overall and 3-1 in A-Sun play with the win. UCF drops to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
FAU will be at Stetson University, Saturday, October 13, for another key A-Sun conference match. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
