BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team defeated Jacksonville University 3-1 Sunday Night, beginning the Atlantic Sun season 2-0 for the first time since 2001. Kristoffer Aarskog scored his second game-winning goal in as many games and Josh Garbee scored a goal for the third consecutive game.
"This win has revitalized us right now," said head coach Kos Donev. "We evened up our record, but more importantly we got to 2-0 in our conference. We now control our destiny instead of having to play catch-up.
"Tonight, we played effective enough to win but we need to improve. We allowed them to play too much and get back into the game. We need to learn to focus and not disappear when the opposing team starts to come back."
Aarskog, the team and conference's leading scorer, scored his ninth goal of the season in the 58th minute to put FAU up 2-1. He retrieved the ball from the Jacksonville defense at the top of the key and dribbled around his man and the keeper. With the net open, Aarskog recorded his third game-winning goal of the season.
Less than six minutes later, Aarskog would strike again. FAU keeper Anders Granstad launched a free kick into the middle of the Jacksonville zone. Bjorn Totland tipped the ball on the fly to Aarskog whose one-on-one shot with the keeper zipped by into the net to put the game away.
"[Kristoffer] Aarskog is a goal scorer," said Donev. "Even though he wasn't as effective as we would have liked for the first part of the game, you better believe that when the ball came to him, he was going to score."
FAU started the scoring very quietly in the 15th minute. Gustavo Alencar started the play off by passing the free kick to Garbee at the top of the key. Garbee juked his defender and hit a soft shot that curved around the keeper's hand and bounced off of the right post into the net for his fifth goal of the season. He has recorded 10 points (four goals and two assists) in his last four games.
JU (1-7-2, 0-2-0 A-Sun) tied the game 15 seconds into the second half. Tyler Stansberry and Richard Blackburn completed a combination give and go that was sent to Tommy Krizanovic at the top of the key. Krizanovic's shot on goal sailed past Granstad to tie the game 1-1.
In the final moments of the game JU launched an attack on FAU, with Granstad turning away a barrage of shots from Brian Blackburn, Richard Blackburn and Jason Alicea at point blank.
Granstad recorded eight saves as the Owls outshot the Dolphins 15-14.
FAU travels to Orlando, FL to play against Central Florida on Sunday, October 12 at 3:30 pm. The Owls return home Thursday, October 23 to play against Lipscomb University at 8 pm. Season ticket packages can still be purchased. Adult packages begin at $21 while individual ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for seniors/children. For ticket information, call 866-FAU-OWLS.
