Jacksonville, FL - Walter Yoder's goal with just over a minute to go in double overtime gave the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team a 4-3 victory over Jacksonville on Friday afternoon. The game was the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
"It's a wonderful feeling to win your first conference game," said Owls' coach Kos Donev. "However, we were not pleased with our performance, especially in the first half. We were able to come back and dominate in the second half though and get the win."
Goals from Tommy Krizanovic and Brett Wagner gave the Dolphins (4-4, 0-1) a 2-0 halftime lead but Rustin Kluge's unassisted goal four minutes and 15 seconds into the second half cut the deficit.
Jacksonville regained their two-goal cushion in the 65th minute thanks to a Richard Blackburn effort, but twenty seconds later the gap was back to one again when senior Josh Garbee scored off a deflection.
Just under two minutes after Garbee's goal, the Owls (4-1, 1-0) tied the game up thanks to freshman Robert Bloom's first career goal off an assist by senior Kristoffer Aarskog, his second of the game.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the 8:55 mark of the second ten-minute overtime period. That's when sophomore Yoder took a square ball from Aarskog just inside the box before blasting the ball past the JU goalkeeper for the game-winner.
FAU will next head to DeLand to take on conference opponent Stetson at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
NOTES: Aarskog's three assists ties him with five others for the FAU single-game record...Yoder's goal is the second of his career...Garbee has now scored a goal in three consecutive games.
