The Florida Atlantic University men’s soccer team (0-5-1, C-USA 0-1) lost 7-2 by in-state rival FIU (5-2, C-USA 1-0) on Monday night.
FAU attempted to control the tempo of the game early, but could never really close the gap after FIU’s Paul Marie put one in the back of the net with in the first eight minutes of the game. Florida Atlantic attempted three shots on goal in the first-half coming from Ronald Garcia, Oliver Powers, and Braxton Fuster. None were able to connect as FAU closed out the half trailing 3-0.
Determined to make a comeback in the second half, the Owl’s came out with a little more offensive fire power trying to make up for lost time. Recording six shots total and four on goal. A goal by Albion Neziri in the 73rd minute gave a late spark to the Owl’s, as Elijah McDonald had an incredible goal three minutes later to make the match 4-2. Ultimately, the Panthers had too much fire power as the game ended with a score of 7-2.
Coach Kos Donev had this to say after the game, “It certainly looked like we are progressing in the right way, although we are not getting the results we want in the last three or four games. Coming into our first conference game we came in a little too offense, and trying to do too much to early that left some gaps in the defense. In our previous matches we were able to contain for most of the game and give ourselves a chance to win. But, tonight FIU was able to expose those mistakes and we couldn’t recover.”
The Owls will travel to Deland, Fla. to face Stetson on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd at 5 p.m.
