Peoria, IL - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team scored with less than five minutes remaining in the game to defeat Cornell University 2-1 Saturday evening in the inaugural Bradley Classsic. Kristoffer Aarskog scored his seventh goal of the season, his seventh goal in seven games, in the 86th minute of play while assisting on Oerjan Stroeksnes' first goal of the season.
FAU (3-3-1), which outshot Cornell (1-3-0) 17-14 in the game, put together the game winner as Gustavo Alencar sent a ball down the right side for Stroeksnes, who dribbled into the Cornell zone before setting up a header for Aarskog, whose attempt eluded Cornell keeper David Mahoney at 85:15. Aarskog now has two game-winning goals on the season.
Stroeksnes put FAU on the scoreboard first with a tally just under 10 minutes into the contest with a goal off a cross from four yards out. The goal at 9:41 marked the fourth time this season and third time in four games that the Owls have scored within the 10 minute mark. Fellow Norwegians Aarskog and Bjorn Totland earned assists on the tally, which would be the only one of the opening half. Totland has recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in his last three games while Aarskog has recorded 16 points (seven goals, two assists) in seven games, 2.29 points per game.
Cornell notched the equalizer at 49:46 of the second half, as Ryan Imamura sent home a centering pass from Peter Lynch to make it a 1-1 contest. Anders Granstad recorded two saves in the win as FAU has gone 3-1-1 in its last five games.
The Owls return to action at 5 pm against James Madison on Friday, September 25 in Miami, FL, at the FIU Soccer Classic. FAU returns home on Friday, October 3 to host Stetson University at 7:30 pm in the team's first conference match of the season. Season ticket packages can still be purchased.
