Tampa, FL. - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team won its first game of the year as the team defeated Providence College 3-1 in the first game of the University of South Florida AmeriSuites Tournament. Scott Rauscher scored his first goal of the year while Kristoffer Aarskog recorded his second multi-goal game of the season.
FAU (1-2-0) immediately had Providence playing on their heels when junior-transfer Rustin Kluge crossed the free kick from the left corner into the Friars box where Rauscher one-timed the shot past the keeper.
The two teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the half until Aarskog scored his third goal of the season. From the far left wing, Aarskog shot the ball to the far right post. The ball ricocheted off the right post, hit the left post and went into the net for the 2-0 lead.
The Friars would cut the lead to one in the 63rd minute when Eoin Lynch took a shot from the close right wing that snuck past keeper Anders Granstad. But the Owls would get the insurance goal in the 89th minute of play when Aarskog's shot from inside the box hit the back of the net for his second goal of the game, ensuring the FAU win 3-1.
The Owls return to action Sunday, September 14 against University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the third game of the USF/AmeriSuites Tournament. FAU returns home Friday, September 17, to play Florida International University at 7:30 pm. Season ticket packages can still be purchased.
