Boca Raton, FL - Scoring three second-half goals, the Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team won its home opening match, 3-1, over Jacksonville University on Saturday morning at the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.
FAU takes a 2-2-1 record into Sunday's home match against another in-state rival, Stetson University, starting at 2 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, the Owls started the second-half flurry two minutes after intermission as redshirt senior Andre McCreath fired a shot inside the far goalpost. The score followed an initial shot from senior Darnell King that was stopped by Dolphins' goalkeeper Johnny Foley.
The lead was short-lived as Jacksonville's Nick Rodriguez tied the match with a goal in the 56th minute. The forward made a long run down the left side of the field before lobbing the ball over the FAU goalkeeper from the edge of the 18-yard box.
FAU regained the lead in the 68th minute when King finished off a header from teammate Karol Chorak. King, a Tampa native, later gave the hosts an insurance goal on a breakaway after intercepting a pass in the middle of the field. King leads the Owls with four goals on the young season.
Junior goalkeeper Jeremy Crumpton made eight saves, including four saves in each period.
The Owls outshot Jacksonville 14-13 and had six shots on goal. King tallied four shots, while Chorak and McCreath each added three shots.
Jacksonville falls to 1-2 for the fall season.
The match was postponed from Friday night by lightning and storms in the Boca Raton area.
