BOCA RATON, FL. - Florida Atlantic University's men's soccer team lost to no. 22 Coastal Carolina 3-2 on a hot and rainy Friday evening. Freshman Matt Baum scored his first collegiate goal while the Owls played a man down the entire second half.

"Under difficult circumstances, we were able to come back and keep ourselves in the game," said Head Coach Kos Donev. "Being down by two goals and down a man the entire second half, we were able to maintain good play against a tough competitor."

Coastal Carolina (3-0-0) set the tone early with a goal at the 8:40 mark. Off of a long pass, Owls (0-2-0) keeper Anders Granstad came out of goal to play the ball but Joseph Ngwenya tipped the ball past him and scored on an open net to make the score 1-0. Twenty minutes later Ngwenya would cross the ball from the right corner to the center of the box where Boyzzz Khumalo immediately shot the ball past Granstad for the 2-0 lead.

FAU would score less than a minute later when Bjorn Masson sent a free kick from the corner into traffic where Baum blasted a shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Masson recorded his fourth assist in two games.

Baum would be at the wrong place at the wrong time in the 41st minute when he was given a red card to put the Owls down a man for the rest of the game.

FAU played aggressively in the second half even with a man down, but their aggressiveness would back-fire when Ngwenya snuck by his defender and ripped a shot from the top of the box past Granstad for his second goal of the game.

In the 81st minute of play, new life struck the Owls when Coastal was whistled for a penalty in their box, giving FAU a penalty kick. Bjorn Totland sent the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season, cutting the lead to one.

FAU was outshot 15-12 by Coastal Carolina.
