Tom Newell rejoined the FAU Men's Soccer staff in July of 2010 as the first assistant under head coach Kos Donev. This is Newell's second stint as a member of the men's soccer coaching staff having served four seasons as an assistant under Donev from 2000-03.
Before returning to Boca Raton, Newell spent six seasons as the Sports Information Director and Head Men's Soccer Coach at Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Newell's coaching career began at Marymound University and Eastern University where he served as assistant coach with the men's soccer programs from 1996-99. In addition, Newell served as a youth coach with FPYC and ATSC teams in the Northern Virginia area. For his first coaching position, Newell returned to his high school alma mater (Paint Branch HS) after his collegiate career to serve as an assistant from 1991-92.
Newell played his collegiate soccer at Messiah College and tallied 63 wins in his four seasons from 1987-90. He was honored as a team captain his senior season and scored 14 goals to go along with seven assists. Newell spent his collegiate summers playing for club teams such as the Maryland Bays and the Jamaican Nats Amateur Men's Team. Following college he continued to play in the Washington, D.C. area until his coaching career took shape.
The Silver Spring, MD native was a 1986 graduate of Paint Branch HS where he started all four seasons on the varsity team. He was also a member of the U-16 Maryland state Team and a member of the U-23 National Runner-Up Maryland State Team in 1989.
Newell earned his Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education from Messiah College in the Spring of 1991 and holds an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. He currently resides in Lantana, FL.
