Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team will hit the links for the first time this season by competing in the prestigious Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern University, starting on Sunday, September 26, in Skokie, Ill.
The two-day tournament will offer quality collegiate competition with 16 teams, including three Big Ten Conference squads that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championships. Players are scheduled to play 36 holes on the first day and 18 holes on Monday, September 27.
FAU, ranked 85th in Golfweek magazine’s preseason national poll, returns three players from last year’s team that posted seven top-five finishes, won one tournament title and competed in the Sun Belt Conference Championships. The Owls’ leading returning player is senior Kelly McHugh, who qualified for the United States Public Links Championships this summer after averaging 74.5 strokes per 18 holes last season. The Lakeland native had a season-best 67 score.
Other top upperclassmen on the team include juniors Justin Thompson and Michael Baskovich. Both players competed in every event for FAU last season and had consistent scoring averages under 75 strokes per round.
Joining Florida Atlantic in the Windon Memorial Classic will be NCAA qualifiers Northwestern, University of Minnesota and Penn State University, and Big Ten teams University of Michigan and The Ohio State University.
