DeLand, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's golf team improved 11 strokes to finish third overall at the Stetson Intercollegiate at Southridge Golf Club in the team's final tournament of the fall season. After finishing in second place in his previous tournament, Torstein Nevestad claimed medalist honors by finishing first individually on the 6,328-yard par-72 course, his first collegiate tournament win.
Nevestad shot a four-under par 140 for the tournament, defeating the next player by only one stroke. Nevestad finished in the top ten in three of the four fall competitions. Two Owls, Anibal Ochoa and Joel Gibbons, also finished in the top 25. Ochoa shot a second-round 74 to finish 17 while Gibbons improved three-strokes from the first day to shoot a 148 and finish tied for 18. Michael Cleary shot even par to improve eight strokes from the first round and Ashton Samaroo fired collegiate best 75.
Florida Atlantic finished the two-day tournament with a score of 589, 14-strokes behind winner Rollins College (575). Belmont (578) had the highest finish among Atlantic Sun schools by finishing second overall while host Stetson (601) and Jacksonville (602) finished sixth and seventh respectively. Bethune-Cookman College (595) and Flagler College (596) round out the top five.
FAU will return to action at the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate on Monday, February 16.
