DeLand, FL - Florida Atlantic University's men's golf team finished the first day of the Stetson Intercollegiate tied for fifth place. The Owls shot a first-round 300 and trail the leader, Belmont, by only 14 strokes. Torstein Nevestad is tied for third place after finishing his third opening round of the fall season under par.

Nevestad shot a two-under par 70 on the 6,328-yard part 72 Southridge Golf Course. The freshman shot 35's on the front and back nine to finish one behind the leader. Anibal Ochoa shot a first-round 74 and Joel Gibbons fired a 76 to finish 14 and 25 respectively. Michael Cleary and Ashton Samaroo finished with rounds of 80 and 81.

Florida Atlantic tied for second among Atlantic Sun schools, trailing host Stetson by one stroke and tied with Jacksonville.

The Owls continue play in the second round on Monday.
