DELAND, Fla. – Carding rounds of 75 and 73, sophomore Derron Peyton leads the Florida Atlantic University men’s golf team, tying for second place, after the opening day of the Stetson Invitational at Victoria Hills Golf Club.
Peyton has a history of performing well at Stetson. The native of Boynton Beach, Fla. shot his collegiate best round of 68 at Stetson’s Hatter Invitational last season. He has a two-round total of 148, just two strokes behind first, going into the final round on Tuesday. Peyton is currently tied with Dirk Kuehler of Stetson University.
FAU’s team holds third place overall, four strokes behind Stetson’s team in second. The tournament is being played from the Championship tees where the course has a 74.2 rating and a 141 slope and will play to a par 72 from 7,149 yards.
Senior Airik Medinis finished just one stroke behind Peyton, carding rounds of 74 and 75 for a total 149, tying for fourth. Pablo Gerboles-Parrilla and Payton Olsen tied for 19th both shooting 155 over two rounds of play. Gerboles-Parrilla shot rounds of 77 and 78 while Olsen shot 76 and 79. Alex Gates rounded out FAU’s team finishing in 22nd with a two-round total of 157. Morgan Hill tied for eighth, playing as an individual, shooting 76 in the first two rounds.
Bethune-Cookman University leads the tournament going into the final 18 holes with a team total of 593. The Owls will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday looking to improve their third place finish at Stetson.
