FAU Men's Golf Shoots Low Round to Finish Third in Strong Florida Gulf Coast Invitational
Oct. 13, 2009
Posting the tournament's lowest round score, the Florida Atlantic University men's golf team finished a strong third among a talented field of teams in the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational at the West Bay Golf Course. The Owls' four golfers combined to shoot a one-over-par 289 team score to pass Stetson University during Tuesday's final 18-hole round. FAU finished the event with an 885 team 54-hole score. Two teams from the host Florida Gulf Coast took home the top two spots with the "B" team being on top with a 876 score, which was five strokes better than the Eagles' "A" team. Stetson placed fourth place and Bethune-Cookman University rounded out the tournament field. "Our goal for the final round was to have Florida Gulf Coast be the only team to beat us," said Men's Golf Coach Angelo Sands. "I am very proud of the guys for their strong effort in the final round . . . We played fantastic to beat Florida Gulf Coast's teams on their home course today. That shows what this team is capable of this season." Senior Ben Silverman fueled Tuesday's comeback with a two-under-par 70, which improved him to tie for second place individual honors. He posted scores of 73 and 72 during Monday's opening day. "It was an all around solid day for me on the course," said Silverman. "I was trying to play smart on a very challenging golf course by hitting a lot of fairways and greens. That gave me a chance to score low and help the team." Other FAU golfers posting strong performances on Tuesday included Justin Thompson, who fired an even-par 72; Kelly McHugh, who ended three consistent rounds with a one-over-par 73; and Carl McCauley, who had a 74. David Ziglar rounded out the team score by shooting a pair of 79s in the final two rounds.
Michael Baskovich competed in the tournament as an individual and had a one-under-par 71 in first round before concluding with a 74 on Tuesday. The Owls are scheduled to return to the links on October 23 at the three-day Bethune-Cookman Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
